Precast Concrete Panels for Silage Pits

Prestressed concrete panels manufactured and supplied by ACP (Concrete) Ltd are ideal for the construction of silage clamp walls.

The high strength imparted by prestressing enables the concrete panels to flex under load and ride the stress of machinery impact during emptying of the clamp without serious damage.

Precast concrete wall panels are smooth and durable and the 90º wall/floor joint makes emptying the clamp easy minimizing wastage and reducing the likelihood of damage to outloading machinery.

Horizontal and vertical cantilever panels are available. Both wall systems have interlocking tongue and groove joints, which allow the walls panels to share the load between units.

Precast Concrete Silage Panels – Fixing Options

Horizontal Concrete Panels
Horizontal precast concrete panels are designed to be supported by steel columns as part of a silage barn or as an independent king post and panel wall system. The wall panels span from column to column without the need for continuous strip foundations. This system is ideal for the construction of raised walling where silage effluent is allowed to exit the clamp via a gap between the wall panels and the floor.

By constructing the silage clamp within a silo barn, dirty water collection is minimized as the rainwater can be diverted into clean water systems. The concrete panel system is ideal for this system utilizing the steel frame of the building for the support of the silage walling.

A range of prestressed concrete panel thicknesses are available to suit a wide variety of load situations, 145mm thick and 180mm thick are suitable for most applications and 280mm thick for the highest load situations. For panel selection, please see the safe load span tablesACP Concrete precast panels are generally available in three standard heights, 1m, 1.2m & 1.5m (280mm thick 1.2m high only) and the tongue and groove joint allows the units to fit together in combination to give the desired overall silage wall height. Panels can be made to measure in lengths up to 20’ (6.085m). Where a division wall is required double loading horizontal panels are also available to fit between steel columns.

Composite precast panels are available for clamps requiring a flush surface whilst still using the horizontal panel system. Two thin section prestressed panels are fitted between steel posts with mass concrete infill inside the cavity. This solution gives a silage wall with massive performance capacity at an affordable cost whilst still maintaining the benefits of a prestressed, precast wall panel system.

“Foundation Free” – All horizontal concrete panels are designed to be installed without a continuous concrete strip foundation. The prestressed panels seat on either a steel landing cleat fixed to the columns or directly onto the  floor of the clamp. This makes concrete wall installation weather independent avoiding site delays from prevailing weather conditions.
After installation the internal joints are sealed using polyurethane mastic sealant provided, external joints may also be sealed if required.  If resting on the floor it is advisable to use a compressible sealant under the bottom panels to give a watertight seal.

Vertical Cantilever Walls
Prestressed concrete cantilever panels are supported in a simple concrete trench foundation using cradles and reinforcing bars supplied with the panels. All ACP freestanding cantilever panels are designed to accept load from both faces to allow for future clamp extension. This feature also ensures that accidental loading on the outside of a clamp does not cause overloading on a wall designed for single side loading.
The cantilever panel system provides a perfect right angle wall to floor joint with no above ground steelwork required.

This concrete panel system is ideal for free-standing silage clamps to both perimeter and division walls. Internal silo division walls can also be constructed within a silage barn using the cantilever panel system. The precast concrete panels are available in 1m, 1.2m and 1.5m widths and in standard heights up to 4.0m high (AFFL). Both 145mm panels and 180mm thick panels are suitable for silage walling, selection depends on overall storage height, see safe load tables.




Arrow Panels

These are precast concrete freestanding panels that sit directly onto the concrete floor. Available in 1m widths and heights of 2.4m, 3m and 3.6m the panels have a robust 200mm thick stem and an interlocking, heavy base providing stability. The panels can be bolted to the floor using Excalibur bolts - bolting is essential for 3.6m high panels and recommended for all heights for silage storage.

Concrete Panels - Anaerobic Digester Silage Clamps
Hungry bio digesters have a massive appetite for silage and therefore large silage clamps. ACP offers a new breed of concrete panels to meet this challenge. A range of panels is available to suit clamps up to 6m high. Please contact our sales office to discuss your requirements.

All ACP’s precast concrete panels are designed to BS 5502 part 22. Due to the highly polluting nature of the stored material it is essential that the clamp is not overloaded (particularly during compaction) and that proper provision is made for the collection of effluent. (Silo loading sign)
